2024 Scholarship Winners
Cecilia Moy Yep Scholar: Selina ChenSelina is the daughter of first-generation immigrants, and one of the first in her family to attend college. A consistent honor student at the Academy at Palumbo, she challenges herself through enrollment in rigorous classes. In addition, she plays the violin for Palumbo’s String Ensemble, and has participated in races and volunteering opportunities offered by Student Run Philly Styles. Outside of Palumbo, she is an active member at her church, where she serves as a student leader in her fellowship group, a helper for the church’s After-School Program during the school year, and a Philadelphia Urban Missions Program staff member during summer. This fall, Selina plans to major in Biology at Boston University, with the intent of pursuing a career in medicine.

PECO Scholar: Giselle JapGiselle is a student at Julia R. Masterman High School, who enjoys learning and immersing herself in a variety of activities. At Masterman, she performs with the school orchestra as principal second violin, manages varsity badminton, and serves as secretary and treasurer of Masterman’s National Honor society. She is a National Merit Scholarship finalist, recognized for her accomplishments, skills, and potential for college success. Her academic achievements includes attaining 14 marks of 100 in Honors Classes. Giselle also finds joy in serving the community through tutoring and leading Sunday School. She worked for two summers at the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation where she learned and contributed to efforts to promote Philadelphia's Chinatown. As a first-generation college student, Giselle is grateful to her family, her school, and the Holy Redeemer community for supporting her through high school. She will be studying Philosophy and Theology at the University of Notre Dame.

Barbara P. Bishop Memorial Scholar : Una LiuUna is a student at Central High School, where she maintains outstanding grades in multiple Advanced Placement and Honors classes. She received Meritorious Honors and AP Scholar with Distinction for her academic achievements. Her recognitions include being named as Vice President of Barnwell National Honor Society, and presented with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, Bank of America Student Leader, and First Place - PA DECA States Principles of Business. She also founded the Otaku Central Club and started tutoring lessons at Central. She is involved in various activities that champions several causes in the community. Una will be pursuing a Business degree at the University of Pennsylvania.

Powell Family Foundation Scholar: Jenny LooJenny is a student at Central High School where she excels in academics and extracurricular activities. She serves as president of the American Students of Asian Origin and the CHS Outreach, as well as captain of the girls’ varsity volleyball team. She is a two-time district twelve volleyball champion and led the largest high school Asian Multicultural club in Philadelphia. Jenny volunteers every summer as a Student Ambassador at the Pennsylvania Hospital. She participates in activities of the Philadelphia Suns and joins Philadelphia race events throughout the year. She was accepted as a product design intern at Wharton’s Stevens Center for Innovation in Finance where she helped build an “App Made for Teens, by Teens” to help high school seniors process and better understand financial realities of going to college. She will attend Drexel University as a Liberty Scholar, and is excited to see the impact she can make in the future.

PASSi Scholar - In Memory of Im Ja Choi: Joy LuisJoy is a top Honors student at the Academy at Palumbo. She balances her academic, volunteer and work activities while still maintaining outstanding grades throughout her four years of high school. She participates in multiple school activities, including the girls variety volleyball, girls varsity flag football, and medical club. She actively supports her community as a volunteer with the Philadelphia Suns lion dance team, and as volleyball teacher/coach to kids. Joy finds fulfillment in helping young children, and this has inspired her to go into the medical field. She will be attending Widener University, with a career goal of becoming a NICU Nurse and helping as many kids as possible.
