2024 Summer Workshop with Dr. Belinda Huang
On August 10, 2024, Dr. Belinda Huang, PhD, taught the Communications & Finding Your Voice workshop to AAWC Scholars and board members. Dr. Huang presented her Best Practices for Excellence in Public Speaking and addressed communicating in a way that your message can be heard and understood; building confidence and speaking up for what you believe; and, exuding confidence, knowing your material well, and connecting with your audience.
Dr. Huang is the Principal of Celadon Consulting, which offers customized leadership, talent, and organizational development in higher education and organizations. She has over twenty years of experience working in higher education and her research and teaching specialties include women’s leadership, faculty of color, campus climate, and postdoctoral scholars.
Feedback from the scholars include:
"Dr. Huang's constant reassurance that good public speaking takes time resonates with me, especially when she mentioned her lack of confidence in undergrad. It gives me hope that I can continue growing my soft skills throughout my career."
"I thought I was good at communicating, but when I heard about the things not to do or the things that help with better communication, I realized that my communication can improve."
"Dr. Huang was excellent and very inspiring. I learned a lot from this workshop and helpful with all the information she provided."
"I loved the idea of finding our voice instead of being the shy stereotypical image that the society sees us."
"I really resonated with the concept of modern minority. Being an Asian American woman, I am often challenged to speak in public. I would rather to stay quiet so I don't attract attention because I am not expected to be in the spotlight. However, this hesitation often reinforces the unfair stereotype that hurts my right."
