Cecilia Moy Yep Scholar: Jeong Hwa Kim

Our 2010 Cecilia Moy Yep Scholarship recipient, Jeong Hwa (Emily) Kim, truly embodies the spirit of AAWC's scholarship program. Despite family obligations which included care giving and helping in the family business, she excelled academically at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School and distinguished herself as salutatorian of her graduating class. A member of the National Honor Society, Emily held leadership positions in several extracurricular activities and "learned the value of giving, commitment, endurance and gratitude" through community service. Her internship at Einstein/Moss Rehabilitation Hospital contributed to her desire to pursue a medical career. She will be attending Emory University.

Weena Doyle

PECO Scholar: Weena Doyle

Consistently ranked near the top of her class, Weena Doyle, our PECO Scholar, majored in International Studies at West Philadelphia Catholic High School. She received Honorary Recognition for her participation in Model United Nations and served as representative all four years of the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia Student Ambassador Association. This highly motivated student-athlete balanced Advanced Placement classes and went beyond what was required in her many school activities and community service. She also found time to tutor at her elementary school - Holy Redeemer. She is described as a "true student leader, who is constantly challenging herself and is determined, efficient and someone who perseveres." Weena will be attending Drexel University.

Connie Liao

The Powell Family Foundation Scholar: Connie Liao

Our Powell Family Foundation Scholar, Connie Liao, ranked first in her class at George Washington High School. She participated in many diverse activities including membership in the National Honor Society. Among her many achievements, Connie was chosen as one of only 12 student scientists to work at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in cutting-edge laboratory research and was selected as part of Common Ground Mission - a group of high school students of different faiths who traveled to Israel. She will be attending the University of Pennsylvania - the first in her family to attend college pursuing her interest and desire to become a pediatrician.

_AAWC Scholar: Johanna Djuhadi

_Although a recent immigrant from Indonesia, Johanna Djuhadi ranked second in her class at Furness High School and demonstrated leadership skills in both her school activities and community service. Her achievements include membership in the National Honor Society and participation in the YES (Youth Empowerment Program) sponsored by the Free Library of Philadelphia. Johanna challenged herself and earned all A's in rigorous courses which included AP Calculus and AP English - truly commendable considering English is her second language. Her deep commitment to community service will continue as she has been accepted into the four year Intending Nursing Program at LaSalle University.

_AAWC Scholar: Je Un Park

_In the words of her school counselor, Je Un Park "is one of the shining stars in the senior class". "She exhibits that wonderful combination of strong academics and leadership". She is well-regarded as a leader by her peers and teachers alike. This outstanding student at Upper Dublin High School consistently maintained superior grades in her Advanced Placement courses, scored over 2000 in her SAT scores and participated in numerous activities ranging from Student Government, National Honor Society and Spanish Club. Highlights of her commitment to community service include two mission trips to Kenya and to Gulfport, Mississippi which was damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Je Un will continue her education in the Honors Program at the University of Delaware.

_The 5 Tran Sisters Book Scholar: Hanh Nguygen

_This first time award is being presented to Hanh Nguyen, from West Philadelphia Catholic High School. Hanh succeeded as President of the Cultural Diversity Club, Vice-President of Students Against Destructive Decisions and Treasurer of the National Honor Society, gaining confidence and leadership skills through her years of participation. Hanh will be attending Temple University with the goal of going into pediatric nursing.

_Sabrina Soong Memorial Award: Huong Nguyen

Although she is not the first of in her family to attend college, Huong Nguyen credits her parents for guidance and support in motivating her (one of 10 siblings) to pursue their dreams through education. A solid student at West Philadelphia Catholic High School, she graduated in the top ten, participated in extracurricular activities of which the Cultural Diversity Club was most important to her and views community service as a responsibility. Her dream is to become a radiologist and will begin that journey at Temple University.
