Cecilia Moy Yep Scholar: Jennifer WongJennifer graduated from J.R. Masterman HighSchool as a member of the National Honor
Society. She is truly a well-rounded individual. Her achievements include having been selected to serve as a co-captain of the varsity tennis team. In her free time, she created a film documentary about the long term consequences to the Cambodian society and culture and to the people who survived the atrocities committed during Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge regime. She uses this documentary as a teaching tool to educate people about the struggles and hardships of the Cambodian people because of the devastation wrought by Pol Pot's actions. Jennifer will be attending the University of Pennsylvania this Fall. |
PECO Scholar: Chan MaoChan is inspired by the courage and determination of her family who came to the United States
just two years ago from Cambodia to live the American Dream. She graduated from Furness High School as a Pennsylvania Congressional Award medalist. In addition to her strong academic performance, she also found time to volunteer as a mentor and tutor to other recent young immigrants, as a translator and teacher’s aide for several organizations including the Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Associations Coalition (SEMAAC) and the Pennsylvania Migrant Education Program. She is devoted to her community and will be a nursing major at Penn State University. Chan’s long term goal is to open a medical clinic in Cambodia. |
The Powell Family Foundation Scholar: Sisi LiuSisi graduated from Lower Merion High School after serving in leadership roles in many school
activities, including as captain of the Academic Decathlon Club and member of the National Honor Society. Sisi lived in China for 16 years before coming to the Philadelphia area. She is proficient in three languages: Chinese, English and Japanese. She spent two summers as an intern at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wistar Institute where she helped in the cancer research laboratory. Sisi plans to major in Biology at Penn State University. |
Wachovia Foundation Scholar: Xuxu Chen
Xuxu Chen
in many of the most challenging academic courses offered at South Philadelphia High School, where she excelled. She was accepted in the College Excel Dual Enrollment Program which allowed her to take college level course work during her junior year. Xuxu has participated in numerous volunteer activities in her community and through her school where she tutored other students, as well as served as a student intern at the School District of Philadelphia translating documents. She plans on studying landscape architecture at Penn State University. Her long term goal is to create a green healthy environment to enhance quality of life in urban areas, possibly in southern China from where her family emigrated.

Jennifer is a graduate of John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School. She has been actively involved
in many school activities such as the Hallahan Mathletes and as a member of the Indoor/Outdoor Track and Field team. She has volunteered in the Chinatown community where she has lived all of her life, and worked at GlaxoSmithKline as a business intern. Jennifer will be attending Temple University as an Urban Studies major. Her long term goal is to revitalize the urban atmosphere in Philadelphia.

East West Music Scholar: Grace Ye Eun Kim
Grace is a senior at the Girard Academic Music Program in Philadelphia, where she participates in Concert Choir, Band, Orchestra, and the String Quartet, including the City Concerto competition and Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, and is also a member of the National Honors Society. She is currently a student of Kyoungwoon Leah Kim. Grace was the winner of the regional WMEA (Washington Music Educator's Association) 2006, as well as State Finalist for Solo Violin and earned Superior rating as Solo Flute. Grace has also participated in the Northwest Musicfest for Violin and Flute and earned silver medals for Solo Violin. Grace will be attending Penn State University, with major in violin performance and minor in chemistry.
