Cecilia Moy Yep Scholar: Tsz Ting (Maggie) CheungOur 2012 Cecila Moy Yep Scholarship Winner, Tsz Ting (Maggie) Cheung distinguished herself
at John W. Hallahan Catholic Girl's High Schoolwith her diligence and work ethic challenging herself by taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses. She was an honors student and was able to balance her academics with the various extracurricular activities within the Hallahan community - Community Service, Polish, Asian Culture and Science Clubs to name a few. Maggie plans to continue her commitment to community service by serving as a mentor in the REACH (Respect, Excellence, Acceptance, Compassion, Honesty) Program at her elementary school, Holy Redeemer, preparing students for all aspects of transitioning to high school. She will be attending Temple University as a Pre-Pharmacy major. |
Peco Scholar: Sandy WangSandy, a graduate of Central High School is no stranger to community service. Tutoring both
elementary and middle school students in various subjects, volunteering at the Independence Library and organizing the annual Philadelphia Immigration Cultural Conference (PICC) for high school students to raise awareness of immigrant issues were just some of her volunteer activities. While taking 11 Advanced Placement (AP) courses, she was able to attain honor roll status and participate in many school activities. Sandy will be matriculating at Drexel University in the Business and Engineering curriculum. |
Powell Family Foundation Scholar: Kane LeeBalancing her challenging coursework, volunteering and handling family obligations did
not deter Kane from maintaining excellent grades at Central High School She was on the honor roll from her freshman through senior year. Kane was a member of the National Honor Society, mentored her middle school robotics team, participated in the Orchestra/Band and was Treasurer of the Math Club. Kane's interests lie in the sciences and political science. She will pursue her studies at the University of Maryland. |
PNC Scholar: Yongyu (Vinnie) FengAlthough she faced many cultural and language barriers as an immigrant from China at the age of 10, Vinnie persevered in learning English and appreciated the opportunity and value of a good education. She motivated herself to take Advanced Placement (AP) classes at Pennsauken High School and ranked 6th of her graduating class. Despite her challenging courses, she volunteered as a youth leader of Boat People SOS, participated in a Chinatown Cleanup and a Senior Citizens Prom. Her involvement in various social service organizations has inspired her to major in Pharmacy at the University of the Sciences.

HSBC Scholar: Trang DangTrang immigrated to the United States with her family from Vietnam just four years ago. As
a student at South Philadelphia High School, she was involved in the violence against Asian students and emerged as a leader. Trang has spoken at many events including the White House Initiatives on Asian American and Pacific Bullying Prevention Summit, Nova Conference, and Campaign for Non-Violent Schools. In addition, she volunteers with the Boat People SOS. Trang graduated second in her class, was a member of the National Honor Society and a White Williams scholar for four years. She will be the first in her family to attend college and will be matriculating at Penn State University majoring in electrical engineering. |
State Farm Scholar: Peiying LinPeiying was able to balance her academics and family responsibilities as the oldest of three
children. At the Academy of Palumbo, she was on the honor roll all four years and a member of the National Honor Society. Peiying also found time to tutor Spanish and Psychology, volunteered with the American Red Cross, and participated in the school's Orchestra/Band as a flutist. She looks forward to starting her studies at Temple University's Fox School of Business. |
Alma Belardo Arts Scholar: Hee Hyun (Joyce) JoHee Hyun (Joyce) Jo emigrated from South Korea to America in 2003. Hee Hyun will be
attending Wheaton College Conservatory of Music in Chicago and majoring in Music Education with piano as her major instrument. She is also an accomplished violinist and has been a member of the Montgomery County Youth Orchestra. Hee Hyun has a love of classical music and wanted to pursue a career in music education to share her love of music with children. |
Alma Belardo Arts Scholar: Julianna Melissa BautistaJulianna is a graduate of the High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) and
will be attending the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, England, and will be majoring in theater practice. At CAPA, Julianna was involved in all aspects of theater production that included technical production, acting, and directing, She was the student director for the school's production of "Les Miserables." She is an exceptional actress and even more exceptional as a director. She was the artistic director for CAPA's My Vision Theater Ensemble. |
